Deccan Herald » Metro Life - Mon » Detailed Story
With a touch of nostalgia
Perin Ilavia

Life is full of moments, when you can make the right decision, but at the exhibition of furniture and artifacts, by Nostalgia, at RainTree - the Lifestyle store, it will be difficult to  figure out  what to buy.

There is such a range of things to choose from, in the new collection designed by Bharathi and Nandini.
If you are looking for unusual furniture, there’s a teak dinning table with four chairs, a nest of tables, and dresser, which are replicas of  period furniture with delicate contours, elegant simple lines, with the natural glow of wood.

These are  decorative and designed to enhance small spaces. Jostling  for attention  the tile inlay low table made from a section of a cot, a range of coffee-tables with marble and glass tops placed on a base made from carved beams and pillar tops.

Don’t miss out on the brass spittoon coveted into a side table, wall brackets, candelabra, bar units, key holders, sofa and chairs with backs made from carved banisters,  and woven with cane, which extend ethic chic. Elegant side boards designed from various pieces of carved beams, doors and window frames, look opulent, and so functional.

All the exhibits created from old discarded wood, is teak or rosewood, sourced from villages and houses in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and objects designed, keeping in mind traditional materials, while producing contemporary furniture and object-de-art.

Nandini told Metrolife, “We personally supervise the team of carpenters, and reconditioning the wood and giving it a new look  is labour intensive and a time consuming job. Every pillar and beam has a different design carved on it, which inspires our creations. We ourselves are always amazed at the end product.”

The duo have been designing and recreating furniture and decorative pieces for twenty  years and, it’s great to see their creativity is a bottomless well. Though years ago they were among the first to make this furniture and arti-facts,  there are many  outlets extending reconstructed furniture, but, as far as Bharathi and Nandini are concerned, they say, “There is no competition.  We have loyal clients, and find people were not so house proud as now when we started this as a hobby years ago, now even the younger generation is  patronising us.  Since this is more a hobby than business, our prices are competitive, and  over the years, it’s been a lot of  fun working together.”

At RainTree, Opp ITC Sheraton up to June 27. 10 am – 7 pm
