Two killed on Mysore Road
Coimbatore, PTI:

Two persons were killed, about  200 houses collapsed and more than 100 trees were uprooted on highways, cutting off traffic on the Udhagamandalam-Mysore Road, following incessant rains in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu for the last two days.

Two persons were killed on Saturday when a huge tree fell on their jeep on Mysore road.  An unidentified body was recovered from a small pond near Hill Bunk in Ooty town.

No casualties were reported in the incidents of house collapse in Glenrock Colony at Valley View and Kandal, about three and 7 km from Udhagamandalam (Ooty) respectively, official sources said.

The affected residents were accomodated in community halls and other safer places, they said.

No power
The entire Nilgiris district has remained without power for the last two days, as electric wires snapped and poles gave way after trees fell on them and also due to power being switched off as a precautionary measure, sources said.

Traffic
Traffic was totally cut off to Ooty from Mysore and Kothagiri, as hundreds of uprooted trees fell on highways at Glenmorgan, Pykara and also at Doddabetta and Manjoor. Traffic was also disrupted from Coonoor to Ooty, due to fallen trees on roads, they said.

A little over 350 acres of farm land have been submerged. The continuous rains have hit the arrival of tourists, who normally throng Ooty during weekends. While Avalanchi in the district received a record 562 mm rains on Saturday,  Udhamandalam received 70 mm, Naduvattom 140 mm, Glenmorgan 92 mm and Ketti 141 mm, the sources added.
