Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) ATMs pan India on Sunday remained inoperative for nearly five hours due to a problem with the visa grid.
Services pertaining to cash withdrawal, account information were severely affected from 10 am to 3 pm, UNI learnt.
Deustche Bank ATMs too faced similar problems with the ATMs remaining inoperative from 8 am to 3 30 pm.
Worried customers
Both the banks have resumed their ATM network since then, while the customer care of both banks reported a lot of worried customers calling in to find out about the problem.
Customer care of SCB attributed the problem to a snag in the visa system and while Deustche Bank attributed it to a network problem with the visa grid caused by the rains.
The problems of account holders were compounded with the day being a Sunday and all branches being shut for the day. SCB has 6,500 ATMs in India while Deustche Bank has 25 ATMs in India.
On an average Rs 96.95 crore is transacted through ATMs of all banks throughout India. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and HSBC Bank have not reported similar problems.
There are roughly about 33 million Visa cards in India. The market share in India by purchase volume is 70 per cent against Master Cards.
