Maharashtra it appears are unbeatable. That, they proved by taking the overall championship in style on the final day of the 24th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championship at the Fatorda swimming pool here on Sunday.
Maharashtra garnered 355 points to take the overall honours, while Karnataka took the second spot with 271 points.
In the boys section, Maharashtra’s Yudishtir Jaisingh (24 points) and Assam’s Sagar Kumar (25) took the individual championship in Group III and IV respectively.
There was something to cheer about for Karnataka as Prathima Kollali (29 points) and Prajwala S (21) won the individual championship in the girls Group III and IV respectively.
Prathima’s haul in the event includes three individual and one relay gold and one silver medal. She also bettered two National records.
For Prajwala, it was certainly a good show considering it was her first ever National championship participation. Her total medal count was three individual and one relay gold medal and two silver medals.
There were three new National records on the concluding day, of which one was by Karnataka’s Prathima in the girls Group III, 100M freestyle event. She stopped the clock at 1:04.99, while the old record in the name of Maharashtra’s Surabhi Tipre stood at 1:06.17.
The other new record was in the boys Group III, 100 metres backstroke event. Sonu Yadav of Uttar Pradesh won the event in a time of 1:12.09 seconds. The old record stood at 1:12.61 (Sagar Patil of Maharashtra).
Maharashtra’s Kavya Bhandekar set the third record in the girls Group III, 100M backstroke event. She timed 1:14.88 to beat statemate Surabhi Tipre’s mark of 1:14.89.
Maharashtra finished with a total of 21 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals, while Karnataka clinched 11 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals.
The diving events at the Campal swimming pool in Panjim, delayed due to rain over the last three days, were still in progress. Even as the organisers struggled to finish the events, rain interrupted the proceedings on Sunday too.
