When someone asked my Theology professor the meaning of 'Holiness', he quietly wrote in huge capital letters on the blackboard- "RELATIONSHIP".
Holy people are loving people. Loving people are Holy people. When you love someone, you love because the love of God stirs you to love. Our potential and desire to Love stems from the Divine, because we are created in God's image. St. John says " Let us love one another, because love is God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love, does not know God, for God is love" (I John 4:7-8). "God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him"( I John 4:16). True love is not a reward for a favor received or love in return for love. Jesus says, "If you love only those who love you, what reward do you gain? (Mathew 5:46). A husband's pay packet doesn't measure a parent's love for the family nor does a wife's spread of sumptuous meals measure to that. One may have a big pay packet or spread of the best of meals, but have no love relationship.
We can understand God's love for us from a Mother's spontaneous love for her child.
A young boy walks up to his mother in the kitchen and hands over a slip of paper to her to settle his bill. “25 rupees for making my bed, 25 rupees for going to the store; 20 rupees for cleaning the house, 30 rupees for taking care of my baby brother when you were away, 30 rupees for a good report card, 20 rupees for helping you in the kitchen, and the total: 150 rupees,” he says.
The mother looks gently at the face of her child with a thousand memories flooding her mind and she turns the paper over and makes her bill. “For nine months I carried you, growing inside me, no charge; for the nights I sat up with you, doctored you, prayed for you, no charge; for the time and the tears, and the cost through the years, no charge; for the nights filled with dread, and the worries ahead, no charge.
For advice and the knowledge, and the cost of your school,no charge; for the toys, food and clothes, and for wiping your nose, no charge. Son, when you add it all up, the full cost of my love is no charge, she says. Tears welled up in the eyes of the child.
He scribbled a big "PAID IN FULL" on his bill and hugged and kissed his mother saying "Mamma, I know you love me, you truly love me."
