Perhaps taking a cue from the mythological Ramayan, in which King Janak married off his four daughters to the four sons of King Dashrath, a villager of Bhojpur district in Bihar, Shiv Dutt Yadav married off his six daughters to six brothers of the adjoining village Laxmipur.
The marriage was not as splendid as the epical one. While in Ramayan the wedding took place after a swaymvar (wherein the bride chooses her groom from among scores of prospective candidates), no such function preceded the unique marriage of the six siblings in the nondescript Ramkarni village in Shahpur block.
Single mandap
Other similarities, however, remained the same. The six bridegrooms, who are said to be cousins, were asked to sit in a single mandap (marriage place) simultaneously along with their respective brides.
Later, all the six sisters took seven rounds of the sacred fire along with their dulhas (bride grooms) and took the marriage vows.
Unprecedented
The unprecedented wedding, which took place amid chanting of vedas and hymns, drew a large number of people from in and around villages.
As curious onlookers vied with each other to have a glimpse of the six couples, chairperson of District Board Meena Devi, who graced the occasion, summed up the event, “Such marriages make economic sense as it reduces the wedding expenses of both the parties.”
Incidentally, the tilak ceremony of all the six bridegrooms, took place the same evening, under a single roof.
