Noted sports administrator, veteran Congress worker and social activist Phani Sharma died here early Monday morning. He was 74. He is survived by two sons and as many daughters.
Family sources said that he died of kidney failure at 5.30 am.
A champion table tennis player himself, Sharma served as the president of the Assam Olympic Association, Guwahati Sports Association, Assam Football Association and Assam Table Tennis Association.
He was the longest serving vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association from North East from 1977 to 1989.
Sharma was also the deputy chef de mission of the Indian contingent to the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
Actively associated with a number of social causes, he also served as an administrator of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.
