South Africa defeated Ireland by 42 runs in a rain-hit one-day international here on Sunday.
After the match was reduced to a 31-over-a-side affair due to rain, Ireland bowlers did not allow South African batsmen to dominate in the expected fashion after hosts' skipper Trent Johnston opted to field first.
Still, the visitors managed to piece together 173 for four, a formidable total under the circumstance.
The Irish batsmen set about their target in a cavalier fashion, but could not sustain the momentum and could manage only 131 runs.
