Need to go beyond data centres
B V Jagadeesh shares with Shibu B S his views and thoughts on the IT industry and what the providers need to do.

He believes that India will soon evolve as one of the major IT hubs in the world. He sees huge initiative across India regarding broadband devolopment. “Earlier, we had seen similiar kind of movements in US to kick-off a new set of applications. Our people are now much aware of the fact that merely watching TV, reading news papers and listening to radio are not the only ways to share information. This awareness is an example of our innovative thinking and readiness to accept new technologies. This is really a good sign for our country to evolve as a major IT hub,” he says.

When technology visionary and pioneer of the internet infrastructure industry B V Jagadeesh says something like that, one has to pay attention. The co-founder of Exodus Communications who now draws a bead on one of the India’s leading datacenter and Managed Service provider, Net Magic Solutions, was in city recently and spoke about many aspects of IT.

In addition to his current role as Chairman of Net Magic, Jagadeesh is an active member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs). He was also previously the group Vice President and General Manager of the Application Networking Group for Citrix. Prior to this, he served as President and CEO of Netscaler Inc.

Jagadeesh is also involved with philanthropic activities that include supporting causes for the advancement of education and Kannada and Indian culture in the US and India. He donated $1million for the upliftment of muncipal corporation schools in his native place, Bangalore.

Jagdeesh’s success story starts with the setting up of Exodus Communications in US. “After acquiring my electrical engineering degree from Government UVCE College, Bangalore, I did my Masters degree in a college in Mumbai, and got a job there, with Micronic devices. Then I got an offer from an American company in Silicon valley and took off there. I have also worked for companies like 3-com and Novell,  and then started Exodus in 1994 with K V Chandrasekhar, which eventually grew to a billion dollar company by the year 2000,” says Jagadeesh.

Net Magic
“I left Exodus in the middle of 2000, and meanwhile Sharad Sanghi  found Net Magic. He approached me and together we went through several deliberations. Now being a key investor, I am keen to bring forth excellency in our data centers and more maintenance services. I also ensured the backup and service of memorable  names in the Internet world like K B Chandrashekhar,  Kanwal Rekhi and Prabhakar,” he says.

Being the Chairman of Net Magic, Jagdeesh also shared his expert vision on the progressive and technical aspects of  IT Service providers. “Some people look at large investments. But I am not looking forward to mere data center aspects. We are open to new technologies and devopments. The question is ‘How to implement them?’ Bringing  in additional technologies, packaging that and offering  it to customers is the key. It is the point where expertise comes into play – for offering that value added service.”

“Entrepreneurs are often faced with challenges of managing multi-platform and multi-vendor solutions on a 24/7 basis to support mission-critical requirements. They need to deploy and operate a multitude of enterprise-grade monitoring and management tools and utilities. Above all, there is a constant pressure to minimise capital and operational expenditure and maximise returns on investment. Understanding these needs of the customers and deploying a variety of tools to provide advanced services is what we are doing in Net Magic,” says Jagdeesh.
“Hence the entreprenuer is multitudinously benefited. The major thing is that he can concenterate more on his core business. Even though the technology changes rapidly, he does not have to bother much about that. Service providers must ensure this safe environment to their customers,” asserts Jagdeesh.

He also pointed out Remote Infrastructure Management Services including the Management of servers, Networks, OS and Applications, Monitoring and Management, Managed Data backup and restoration and ensuring availability, security and perfomance, as some of the important sectors which IT Service providers have to mainly concenterate upon.

When asked about his success mantra in all the ventures, Jagdeesh smiles and says, “See, the success mantra depends on what dreams you have, and when you start translating those dreams into reality. For that you must have committment and dedication and most of all,  never lose your mind in the ups and downs.”
