The Bangalore Forum for Street and Working Children, organised a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office on Tuesday, demanding the Government to stop land auctions.
Instead, it should use the acquired land to provide housing for the destitute and build hospitals, play grounds and schools, the forum stated.
A forum of 30 organisations, working in the interest of slum dwellers and street children presented their memorandum to the Special DC (Enforcement), Shantappa.
The Co-ordinator for the Forum, Ramachandrappa said according to survey there are 86,000 families that are living on streets in Bangalore and the Government needs to look into their interests as well.
The Forum’s demands also include, providing these 86,000 families housing, with legal documents using the acquired land. The land should also be used for building hospitals, schools, parks etc rather than be sold to builders.
Undeclared slums should also be given clearance, it was demanded. After receiving the memorandum, the DC said not all the land had been auctioned and 4,000 odd acres had been distributed to various departments including the BDA for constructing small houses.
