The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a programme initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas.
Funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, the programme is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore through the Society for Innovation and Development (SID), IISc Campus in association with the Zonal centres at IISER - Kolkata, HBCSE-Mumbai, IIT(B)-Mumbai & ICMR-New Delhi.
Selection for Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine streams will be carried out by IISc, IIT-Bombay, Mumbai and ICMR, New Delhi respectively.
Eligibility
Basic Sciences
Stream SA: Students joining XI Standard (Science Subjects) during 2007-2008 and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination.
Stream SB: Open to all students pursuing First Year B.Sc degree / M.Sc. Integrated (UG Programme in Basic Sciences) during the academic year 2007-2008 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination.
Students of Class 12 (+2) of the academic year 2007-2008 who are aspiring to join IISER for Integrated MS programme for the session August 2008 may also take the KVPY Aptitude Test for the SB Stream provided they secure a minimum of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination.
Stream SP: Students pursuing XI, XII Standard, First or Second year of any UG programme in Basic Sciences during the academic year 2007-2008 and having secured a minimum of 60%. (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in X Standard and XII Standard Board Examination may apply. A science based research project is required along with the application.
Engineering
Engineering EA: Students joining First year B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch. during the academic year 2007-2008 and having a minimum of 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination. A research project is required along with the application.
Engineering EB: Students joining Second year B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch. during the academic year 2007-2008 and having a minimum of 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) in the First year exam of B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch. A research project is required along with the application.
Medicine
Stream MA: Students enrolled in second year MBBS programme during the academic year 2007-2008. Students must have passed XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Science subjects. A copy of the Bio-Medical research project is required along with the application.
Fellowships
Basic Sciences:
Rs 2000 pm and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 4000 up to XII Standard.
Rs. 4000 pm and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 8000 up to B.Sc I to III year / Integrated M.Sc.
Rs. 5000 p.m. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 10000 during M.Sc. and IV & V year Integrated M.Sc.
Engineering
Rs. 4000 p.m. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 8000 up to III year and Rs. 5000 p.m. and annual contingency grant of Rs. 10000 in subsequent years till completion of M.E./M. Tech./M.Arch.
Medicine
Rs. 4000 p.m. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 8000/- up to III year and Rs. 5000/- p.m. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 10000/- in subsequent years till completion of MBBS.
Annual renewal of fellowships will depend on maintaining good academic performance in the chosen stream and satisfactory performance in Summer Programmes. KVPY Fellows in the Basic Sciences who opt out of the stream at the end of XII Standard will forfeit the Fellowship and contingency support.
