Lend credit to agri sector, bankers told
Mangalore, DHNS:

“Banks should lend more credit to the agricultural sector,” said National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) Director L S Raman.

Speaking at the district consultative committee and district-level review committee meeting for banking development of the district held at Zilla Panchayat auditorium here on Wednesday, he said agriculture is the main occupation in Dakshina Kannada. There is a need to lend more for agriculture sector.

He called upon the bankers to try out participatory credit plan which was successful in Kerala, wherein local governing body will identify the requirements of the particular region.

He urged the bankers to motivate people to open an account.

Nabard AGM K P Udupa said that there has been a increase in the flow of credit to the rural areas. There has been a massive shift from the commercial bank to the co-operative sectors, people have started borrowing from co-operative banks as well.

He said Dakshina Kannada district’s District Credit Plan is second largest in Karnataka, inspite of the DK district having five blocks. However, our disbursement of credit to the priority sector is highest in the State with Rs 350 crore per block.

He said our advances have been increasing and the recovery figure is also fairly good.

ZP CEO A M Kunjappa presided. Earlier welcoming the gathering, Syndicate Bank DGM K U Shanbhag said there is an increase in credit-deposit (CD) ratio to 63 per cent. There is good performance in disbursement under district credit plan 2006-07.

He called upon the bankers to fulfil their commitment under social lending.  Reserve Bank of India Assistant General Manager K V Gopal was also present.
