A day after winning the second Asian Central Zone volleyball championship in Islamabad, India stormed to victory in the first match of the inaugural test series against Pakistan on Wednesday, reports PTI from Karachi.
The Indians won 25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 25-17.
The second test will be played on June 28 at POF Wah, the third at Qayyum Stadium in Peshawar on June 30 and the last match at WAPDA Gymnasium at Lahore on July 2.

Wadoo set for East Bengal

Decks were cleared for Mehrajuddin Wadoo to turn out for East Bengal in the coming season, with his previous club Mohun Bagan withdrawing the suspension slapped on him and letting him off with a fine, reports PTI from Kolkata.
The Indian Football Association’s player status committee decided to give Wadoo the green signal to don the East Bengal jersey after Bagan lifted the three-month suspension.

Merchant surged to a 52-48, 60-21, 59-45 win. India No 1 Alok Kumar also got off to a good start, beating Ashok Shandilya 90-24, 90-34, 65-29. In Group ‘D’, Manan Chandra beat MIG’s Gaurav Prabhu 88-20, 75-48, 76-7.

FIFA climbdown on altitude ban

FIFA have relaxed a ruling they made last month and will allow international matches to be played at an altitude of up to 3,000 metres above sea level rather than 2,500 metres, reports Reuters from Zurich.
Their original decision led to widespread protests in South America where a number of regularly used venues are above 2,500 metres.
The South American football confederation, which has three members on the FIFA executive, disagreed with the ban following its own meeting earlier this month.

Hans named Jharkhand coach

Rajinder Singh Hans, who guided Uttar Pradesh to the Ranji Trophy title last year, on Wednesday took up the job of coaching the Jharkhand for the forthcoming season, reports PTI from Jamshedpur.
