Shortly after the barring of bullet tankers and all other heavy vehicles like oil, petrol tankers, timber, granite and mines trucks and articulated vehicles, the district administration has on Wednesday imposed a night ban on the movement of loaded LPG bullet tankers on the Shiradi ghat section of Mangalore- Bangalore NH 48 until July 21.
According to a press release issued by the Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwara Rao, only unloaded heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply on the road between 8 pm and 5 am.
The arrangement is to facilitate repair of the badly damaged curves on the ghat section, as requested by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
The ban is on vehicles whose tonnage exceeds 16,200. All the trucks under the category was blocked by the police on Tuesday, forming a long que of around 500 trucks at the district border.
The errant truck drivers were penalised, but the trucks were allowed to move towards Mangalore after District in-charge minister Nagaraj Shetty intervened.
The drivers however argued that they were using the load only because Hassan district administration has not banned the movement of heavy vehicles.
