Wigan and Leigh, the design college situated on Dickenson Road, presented the final creations of their graduating students recently. The fashion design students showcased their collection in front of a four-member jury which included well-known designer, Nirmal Mandoth. The students had to make the outfits from scratch to match themes such as ‘Madame Royale’, which was an inspiration from the royal 18th century to ‘Road Rage’ depicting the frustration of today’s traffic.
Aparajita, Shobhita, Pooja, Naisha and Shahala displayed their efforts with passion and confidence. Each of them showed six outfits, which were in keeping with a particular theme. ‘Snow Queen’ by Aparajita gave a fantasy feel with the white fluid gowns and dresses. ‘Avenida’ by Shobhita was about the modern day woman, who looks for comfort in fashion and focussed on leisure wear. ‘Elegance Transpired’ by Pooja stood out for being bright and fresh with a vibrant colour story including green, blue and orange, that came together in a splendid manner. ‘Madame Royale’ by Naisha was a fusion of the rich 18th century culture and the new fashion-conscious woman. ‘Road Rage’ by Shahala was bold and daring in black, red and gold, which brought out the anger and the suffocation of someone craving to break free. The fabrics used ranged from organza, lace, silk with brocades, georgettes to cottons, linens and stretched knits. The garments were embellished with belts, studs, crystals and the like.
Fathimath Naisha and Shahala topped with equal scores. While Pooja Jaykumar got the most creative design award, Shobhita Mishra was rewarded the most wearable design and Aparajita Banerjee won the technical award.
