Heavy rains disrupt normal life in Kodagu
DH News Service, Madikeri:

Heavy rains that lashed Kodagu district throughout Friday disrupted the normal life. Incessant rain in the southern part of the district resulted in floods in the Lakshmanateertha river. Roads and bridges submerged under rain water in some of the places.

As garbage blocked a drainage near India Garage on Omkareshwara Temple Road in the City, the water submerged the road and then flooded into a nearby house. Water washed away several equipment.

Three LPG cylinders were swept by the water, when rain water entered into Coorg Enterprises Garage. The local residents complained that the labourers of Municipal Corporation did not clean the drainage after clearing the bushes recently, which ultimately resulted in blockade during heavy rains.

Fair quantum of rain was received at Talacauvery, Bhagamandala, Madikeri, Virajpet, Siddapur, Napoklu, Somwarpet, Gonikoppalu, Ponnampet, Birunani, Srimangala, Kutta and certain places in northern part of Kodagu like Shanivarasanthe, Kodlipet.

Kutta has received the highest rain, that is, 285 mm in the past 24 hours, while Srimangala (272 mm), Talacauvery (22 mm), Ponnampet (105 mm), Virajpet (61.6 mm), Somwarpet (88.6 mm), Napoklu (149.8 mm), Bhagamandala (139.6 mm) have received good rains.

Heavy rain has been lashing Kutta-Srimangala regions, the place of origin of Lakshmanateertha river. Vehicle users found it difficult to ply on Kanur-Ponnampet road as rainwater flooded throughout the day.

As the bridge near Nittur submerged under water, vehicular movement was completely cut-off. Holidays were declared for schools and colleges in Srimangala and Kutta. Banana plantations were the worst affected in the gusty winds.
