The construction workers in the district have been asked to register themselves as per the Building and Other Construction Workers (Employment Regulation and Service Conditions) Act, 1996 and Regulations, 2006 in order to benefit the financial assistance facility of the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The Board has planned various financial assistance schemes for the welfare of the construction workers. If they have to obtain the benefits, they should register by paying a fee of Rs 25 in the office of the District Labour Officer, who should also deposit Rs 10 on a monthly basis, stated the deputy commissioner in a release.
Besides, the owners of various firms who are involved in construction activities should deposit 1 per cent of their construction expenditure with effect from November 1, 2006 for the Welfare Board as a tax.
The amount can be directly paid by the construction firm owners or by the contractors through a demand draft issued in favour of Chief Executive Officer, Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Karmika Bhavana, Bangalore-29, the release stated.
The Deputy Commissioner added that the owners would be made to pay a fine equal to the specified amount and an additional 2 per cent interest per month on the tax money.
