Deccan Herald » Movie Reviews » Detailed Story
Apne
Manasi Paresh Kumar
Hindi (U/A)
Cast: Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol
Director: Anil Sharma

Geography obviously did not  interest Anil Sharma in school because for him, India does not extend beyond Punjab. He does not even pretend to cater to the rest of India that fall beyond the sarson da’ farms with this movie! Liberally garnished with chaka de pattes, it is an out and out chicken tikka fare, but my god what a bland one!
When Big B and AB jr’s came together, it turned an icon and his struggling son into a brand name and also made the father-son jodi the hottest combination to have in a movie. But the Deols’ combination is not magical. The problem is that this fool hardy attempt, based on a half mangled script that does not do justice to either the talents of Dharamji or Sunny Deol who desperately try to salvage the sorry mess with a couple of cute moments.
Set against the backdrop of the boxing sport, the story has too many loop holes and does not allow the audience to connect with anything. As for the women in the movie, Shilpa Shetty continues her love affair with her earrings while Katrina Kaif is the pretty young thing. Kiron Kher looks bored and shares absolutely no chemistry with Dharamji. But it is Victor Banerjee who is almost criminally wasted. Editing is atrocious and at almost three hours long, the movie taxes even the most ardent Deol fans.
Sharma has really outdone himself with his misplaced sense of nationalism, so all in all, yeh ‘apne’ nahin hain.
