Music has no language and no boundaries. One person who has made a very conscious effort to make music his
life is K S Rajesh, a well-known Hindustani flute artiste and music composer.
Born in a family of music lovers, Rajesh was introduced to music at an early age. He has undergone rigorous training in Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of K Pundalika Shenoy, a pioneer in the tradition of Hindustani flute.
Having received an initiation of culture and tradition in the sphere of music, Rajesh has developed a style of flute playing on the lines of ‘Gayaki Ang’, which explores the vocalistic feature of music in addition to the basic character of the instrument. He performed as a soloist in several music concerts at prestigious music festivals and has received great appreciation. He is presently seeking the guidance of flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and has been fortunate enough to accompany this great maestro in some of the concerts.
One of his major achievements at a very young age has been to win the first prize at the national-level All India Radio (AIR) Music Competition held in 1989. As an approved graded artiste of AIR, he was appointed by AIR Bangalore and had the opportunity of serving this prestigious institution for almost nine years as a staff artiste. As a performer, Rajesh has performed many Hindustani classical flute concerts which has been appreciated a lot. To name a few he has performed at ‘Pandit Savai Gandharva Music Festival’, Kundgol, ‘Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh’, Banaras.
He has composed music both in the audio and visual mediums. ‘Vibrant Moods’, a CD of instrumental music composed and conducted by K S Rajesh was released by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. He has scored music for many other devotional albums and documentaries. He has also composed and conducted orchestral pieces and thematic music compositions composed on various occasions like Asian Braoadcasting Union Conference, ‘Vyayamana Vybhava’ Raj Bhavan, organised by Doordarshan Kendra and others.
He has been teaching music and guiding students in the subject of appreciation of music. Students from India and abroad are seeking guidance from him. His approach to music as a subject is really amazing. Though his professional commitments does not permit him to take many students — he does make time for teaching as it is his passion. In addition, he has also conducted workshops, lecture demonstrations and technical papers as and when called upon to do so by prestigious institutions.
Because of his exposure to Hindustani as well as Carnatic and Western music, he is able to successfully make a comparative study of different styles of music.
Rajesh is also working towards preserving the cultural and spiritual heritage of India and is the founder of Nirvan Foundation Trust, an institution through which some successful programmes and workshops are conducted. Living legends in the field of Indian classical music, including Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Raghunath Seth, Dr N Rajam, Dr Lalith J Rao, Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, to name a few have honoured the invitation given to them by performing at the annual music festival conducted every year and today this institution stands as a unique organisation.
