A strong earthquake hit southwest China early today, killing at least 3 people and injuring 300. There have since been 14 aftershocks. Tremors were felt 200 km (120 miles) away to the north and south.

Anti-terrorist forces arrested Russell Defreitas in New York and Abdul Kadir and Kareem Ibrahim in Trinidad after uncovering a plot to blow up the JFK airport in New York. A wiretap transcript the FBI gave CNN indicated the plotters targeted the airport because of the popularity of its namesake.

Riot police arrest an anti-G8 protester during unrest between police and anti-G8 demonstrators in Rostock on Sunday. Several hundred protestors taking part in a demonstration against next week's G8 summit hurled Molotov cocktails, bottles and fireworks at police. Tens of thousands of protestors marched through this north-eastern German port town to show their opposition to next week's G8 summit of the world's wealthiest nations. Around 125 people were arrested during the riot. AFP
