Former deputy prime minister and BJP leader L K Advani has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene an all-party meeting to decide, once and for all, the vexed reservations issue.
Advani also indirectly admitted that it had faltered in promising reservations to the Gurjars in Rajasthan.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with leaders of the Sindhi community in Ahmedabad late on Sunday evening Mr Advani said: “Time has come to decide on which caste and community should be included in the categories of STs, SCs and the OBC by all political parties so that there is no political ambiguity about it.”
He indirectly admitted that his party had erred in promising reservations to the Gurjars claiming that no individual or a party should promise inclusion to any caste or community in the reserved category.
Don’t politicise
“This should not be allowed to become a political issue and that it should be resolved amicably,” Mr Advani said claiming that he was unhappy with the turn of events in Rajasthan.
He said he had already asked the prime minister to convene an all-party meeting to resolve the issue.
He added, “I have also spoken to Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who conveyed that there has been no violence or untoward incident there since Saturday.”
Asked about Dahod MP Babu Katara who was arrested in the human trafficking case. Advani said the Parliamentary Committee has been convened to look into the charges but claimed that he personally felt that Katara should be removed from the party and as an MP for the nefarious activities.
Later, he expressed surprise over the recent statement by the prime minister that minorities should have the first stake over the resources of the country and claimed that this was against the Constitution of the country that gives an equal right to all individuals.
