The West Asian region remained the top destination for India’s consumer electronics goods last year with exports doubling to $175 million in 2005-06, from $90 million of 2004-05.
The UAE, the hub for re-exports in the region, has seen the major exports push.
“Many of the companies are exporting to the UAE and from here they are re-exporting to Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries,” Kamal Vachani, Regional Director of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) said.
“The region remained the top destination since 2000-01. Before that Singapore, Hong Kong etc were the top destinations,” Mr Vachani added.
Annual export growth in consumer electronics during the past 5 years is estimated at 27.33 pc. Exports were mainly to Italy and the UAE. Colour televisions remained the top export in 2005-06 as well.
