The North East Teachers’ Forum has urged the State government to take an immediate decision for starting a new government degree college for women in arts, science and commerce from the current academic year.
Forum Working President M B Ambalgi in a letter to higher education minister D H Shankaramurthy lauded the government’s decision to open 132 new government degree colleges across the State from the academic year 2007-08.
However, it was unfortunate that the government has not considered the long standing demand of setting up a government degree college for women in Gulbarga.
He pointed out that although there are four private women degree colleges in the city they have failed to cater to the educational needs of poor students.
Girl students even after scoring 70 per cent in PUC could not get admission in these colleges due to high fee structure and donation.
Higher education
"Every year about 1,000 poor and backward class girls remain deprived of higher education due to non-accessibility,’’ Ambalgi said.
By opening a new government degree college for women, the government would be virtually empowering women in the socio-educationally backward district, he maintained.
The Forum wanted the government to fulfil the demand in the larger interests of women education.
