Wearing helmets is optional for women and children riding the pillion on two-wheeler vehicles in Chennai, the government said.
A press release on Monday said since women and children face difficulties in wearing helmets, the Government has decided to make it optional for them.
The rule came into force from June 1 in Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Tirunelveli. The police reported a 90 per cent complaince on the first day. But a day later Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s told the police not to harass those not wearing helmets, which has confused the police.
