Naxal shoot out victim kin gets bigger relief
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Home Minister M P Prakash said after the Cabinet meeting that compensation of Rs 4 lakh has been approved considering the present incident as a special case.

The State government on Monday announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of Venkatesh (45), who was shot dead by naxals in Sringeri on Sunday.

Home Minister M P Prakash told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that compensation of Rs 4 lakh has been approved considering the present incident as a “special case”.  The minister  pointed out the normal compensation given is Rs two lakh.

The minister also clarified that  the present compensation amount  will not set a precedent for the future. He added that there was no confirmation on whether Venkatesh was a police informer or not. Mr Prakash said the Special Task Force has been combing  various places in search of naxals.

Villagers of Gundagatta had gheraoed the Deputy Commissioner demanding compensation from the government in Sringeri. A bundh was also observed in Sringeri against the killing.

No delay
Referring to the Congress’ allegation that there has been delay in clearance of files pertaining to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms after the coalition government assumed office, Mr Prakash said the matter has been discussed in the Cabinet and it was found that the allegation was not justified.
He said that as many as 1.29 lakh files are pending in the DPAR as on April 30, 2007 as against 1.94 lakh on March 30, 2006.

Rules approved
Following the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, the State Cabinet on Monday approved the Karnataka Minority Educational Institutions Rules. The provisions of the new rule would empower the Government to frame procedures for granting and withdrawing recognition for professional colleges run by the people belonging to minority communities, said Mr Prakash.

No clemency
The Cabinet rejected the plea by Shivu and Jadeswamy, who have been sentenced to death by a court in Mandya for murdering an 18-year-old after raping her.

The duo had filed their pleas before the President seeking clemency after the High Court and Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty.

The President had sought the opinion of the State in this regard.
