The Centre, on Tuesday, accorded formal approval to as many as 24 proposals to set up Special Economic Zones (SEZs) including one from Karnataka and much-talked about multi-services SEZ proposed by Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries.
The Board of Approvals (BOA) at its meeting chaired by Commerce Secretary G K Pillai here cleared these proposals. “Forty-two proposals were considered. Of this 24 proposals were granted formal approvals and nine granted in-principle approvals. The rest have been deferred,” Mr Pillai said. The proposal of Gopalan Enterprises (India) Pvt Ltd to set up a SEZ in Information Technology and IT Enabled Services sector at Mahadevapura and Kaggadasapura in Bangalore.

The airport based multi-product SEZ by GMR. The agro processing SEZ by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in Maharashtra, Gems & Jewellery SEZ by Royal Palms India in Maharashtra; IT/ITES SEZ by Wipro Limited in Andhra Pradesh; multi-product SEZ by Indiabulls Industrial Infrastructure Ltd in Maharashtra and Handicrafts & Artisan SEZ by Gujarat Growth Centres Development Corporation Limited in Gujarat were among others cleared.
Those receiving in principle approvals, include Gems and Jewellery SEZ by Gitanjali Gems Limited in Maharashtra, Leather industry SEZ by MIDC, multi product SEZ by Indiabulls Builders Limited in Maharasthra, textile SEZ by DLF Limited in West Bengal and multi product SEZ by Rewas Ports Limited in Maharashtra.
