Awareness should be created among the unorganised sector so that they can avail themselves of their rights, said Labour Commissioner C M Seethimani.
He was speaking at the membership drive, which was held on Tuesday in the city under the aegis of CPI, AITUC and Karnataka State Construction and Quarry Workers’ Association and Karnataka State Cook Assistant and Domestic Helpers’ Federation.
There are nearly 45 per cent of unorganised workers in the State. It is the workers in the unorganised sector, who are in a vulnerable position. Among them those in the construction and quarry industry, domestic helpers, cook assistants are the pitiable lot and those, who are deprived of their basic rights, added the commissioner.
In the present scenario the surviving family of the deceased in an accident at the construction sites are being provided with Rs 1 lakh compensation along with 11 other facilities. The workers should make best use of the schemes, informed Mr Seethimani.
Organisation and struggle seems to be the only way out to provide social security and social justice, said High Court Lawyer and Karnataka State Cook Assistant and Domestic Helpers’ Federation General Secretary S Balan. A minimum wages should be fixed for the domestic workers as well, he added.
