The Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has proposed to set up a 1500 MW capacity coal based thermal power plant in Yadgir taluk of Gulbarga district.
Earlier the power plant was planned at Nandur village near Gulbarga city. “But later surveys showed that a site near Yadgir town is more suitable as it is very close to Gulbarga city. In addition to good rail link, sufficient water is available from the Bheema river near Yadgir town.”, KPCL Managing Director L R Nagarajan told Deccan Herald.
He added that a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared and once the tie-up for coal is finalised, work on the project would commence. Similar DPRs are also being prepared for 1500 MW capacity each coal-based thermal projects proposed at Koodgi village in Bijapur district and Kaushik in Hassan district.
He added that the commissioning of the Unit I of 500 MW capacity Bellary Thermal Power Plant would be delayed till August.
The plant was scheduled to be commissioned in March, 2007. But due to a delay in supply of some crucial machinery by Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), the commissioning had to be re-scheduled for June.
“On June 2 the boiler lighting work was completed. But the coal and ash handling units are yet to be completed. BHEL, which has been awarded the contract for supply of machinery, is finding it difficult to meet the deadline as it has taken up too many contracts in the country. We hope that the remaining work would be completed in the next two months and the oil burning process, prior to the actual coal burning, would commence by August end”, Mr Nagarajan added. The unit is expected to add 3300 million units of energy annually to the State grid.
Asked whether KPCL, in the light of the delay in commissioning of the Bellary Unit I, would reconsider the contract awarded to the BHEL for supply of machinery to the 500 MW capacity Bellary Unit II, he replied in the negative. Mr Nagarajan said already a letter had been issued to BHEL and they would start the work as scheduled. “We don’t think the delay would be repeated in the case of Unit II also”.
