IT captains seek cover for staff

Representatives of 16 big IT companies, including Infosys and Wipro, held a breakfast meeting with Mr Kumaraswamy for nearly an hour and discussed a number of issues concerning the industry. Attacks against IT industry people during night has gone up, they said.

   IT captains on Wednesday expressed serious concern over increasing crime rate in Bangalore and urged Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to intervene and ensure safety, especially of those working in night shifts.
   “We (representatives of IT industry) have expressed concern over increasing crime rate in the City. We want the government to act and ensure safety,” Infosys’ HR Head Mohan Das Pai told reporters after holding a meeting with the chief minister at the latter’s residence here.
   Representatives of 16 big IT companies, including Infosys and Wipro, held a breakfast meeting with Mr Kumaraswamy for nearly an hour and discussed a number of issues concerning the industry. Attacks against IT industry people during night has gone up, they said.
   Mr Pai also said Mr Kumaraswamy had promised to recruit more policemen in the coming days.
   Besides, the problem of traffic congestion in Bangalore and the need to upgrade basic infrastructure in tier II cities of Mysore and Mangalore were also discussed in the meeting.
   “Infosys is investing Rs 2,000 crore in Mysore and there is a need to upgrade infrastructure. I hope the government will respond to it,” he said.
To adopt villages
   Earlier, Mr Kumaraswamy told reporters that IT firms - on the government request - have come forward to adopt some villages and government schools for their overall development. “They (industry representatives) have just expressed their willingness. We must workout details like the number of schools to be adopted, their location and duration.”
   He also said the contribution of IT sector for the growth of Bangalore is immense and the government will try to address problems being faced by the industry.
Police recruitment
   Mr Kumaraswamy said that a proposal to recruit about 5,000 police personnel for ensuring security to the people employed in IT, BT companies and BPOs would be placed in the next Cabinet meeting. He said that the IT industry was concerned about the security of the people working in the companies situated on the outskirts of Bangalore.
