Tapping innovation in young minds
Marianne Thomas
Scientific curiosity is essential for young minds to experiment and learn. The Activity is launching innovation centres to broaden the mental horizons of students.

Imagination is more important than knowledge: one of Albert Einstein’s most famous quotes. The great scientist firmly believed that everyone makes mistakes and the one who has never made mistakes, has never tried anything new. In classrooms today, science is considered a dull and complex subject. Schools do not give space for children to think more practically and independently. A space where learning goes beyond our textbooks.
Innovation Centres
The Activity, a Bangalore based organisation is launching ‘Innovation Centres’. A centre to kindle scientific curiosity among schoolchildren and encourage them to think, innovate and be creative. They are faced with practical problems which they learn to solve through observations, thinking and experimentation.
This interactive workshop will help children develop an interest in pure science. ``India has come to be seen as a world power in technical areas and creativity and this workshop will help sustain and expand that momentum by getting students to think differently,’’ said a delighted Dr Ed Sobey, renowned international educationalist, co-founder Kids Invent!, a world leading provider of innovation based learning, and a project partner of Activity’s Innovation centres.
It encourages children to continue applying their creative talents long after the conclusion of the learning activity. They take pleasure seeing their own ideas and designs work and so are motivated to keep working on their inventions long after class is over.
Richard Feynman said, "What I cannot create, I do not understand." At these centres, which will follow an approach for children to engage in a natural way to learn math and science, is the pleasure of inventing with their own creations. A process of transforming abstract ideas into tangible things.

Innovation

`Activity’s Innovation Centre’ is a great step forward in the journey to encourage creativity and innovation, thereby making a significant contribution to the overall developmant of children in India, said Syed Sultan Ahmed, Managing Director, The Activity, at the presentation of the programme at The Oberoi, on May 31.
Kids Invent! (US), lyles Innovation and Entreneurship - Californias University, and Indian Innovation Association, will be partners for these centres. The activity is one of the largest organisations working with schools of 30 cities across the country for the last decade.
These innovation centres will be launched across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Patna, starting June.
It would help foster learning that is engaging as it is educational for kids from seven to fifteen.
This impact would be large when aimed at schools. ‘Creative Economy’ is a key foundation to the growth of a nation mentioned Dr Ed, who believed that an economy needs creative minds to grow.
The Activity has carved a niche for itself in the areas of education beyond academics through its events, training and consultancy, all of which is aimed at `Enabling young people to grow into fine human beings’.
