STUDYING ABROAD
Ing K Raja Reddy

Dear Sir,
I am doing an engineering and my aggregate is around 65 per cent. I am interested in doing my further education abroad. I want to know whether I can get a scholarship for further studies for the score I have after doing my GRE / TOEFL, depending on its scoring. Whta about scholarship?
Anonymous
Dear anonymous,
Your aggregate of 65% will still make you eligible for higher education abroad. Your performance in GRE mainly and in TOEFL helps in getting admission. However, scholarships availability for further studies is very limited and even almost unavailable for a vast majority of students, leave alone for high academic performers.
Hence, you may explore other options like educational loans now made available by almost all Nationalised Banks in India. Part of your living expenditure, no matter which country you choose to study, can be earned by working the allowed 20 hours per week.

Dear Sir,
My niece is doing her internship after completing her MBBS course. She intends to pursue her higher studies either in UK or USA.
Please give me the details of institutions, admission procedure and cost of education in the said countries. Kindly also inform me about the exam to be taken by her for her post graduate medical course in Karnataka and other states.
Raj, Doddaballapur
Dear Raj,
Your niece, having completed her graduate medical education here in India, stands a better chance to pursue her higher education here. The scenario for medical doctors in USA and UK is bleak or opportunities are almost non-existent. To study in UK one has to take PLAB examination (Proficiency in Linguistic Assessment Board), the first part of which can be taken in India, with part 2 and 3 to be taken in UK. For USA, one has to pass USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) in medical and clinical subjects.
Part one of this examination can be taken in India after which the remaining part has to be taken in USA. This is the point at which visa availability is crucial as they refuse to give the same. How these rules change in the future is anybody's guess.
The only other way is if one chooses to study non clinical subjects and non patient care subjects such as radiology, immunology, molecular biology, genetics, pathology, physiology, community medicine, hospital administration, research, etc.
One can seek admission for a Master’s programme in these areas in any one of the many universities by clearing GRE and TOEFL. However, even this becomes a narrow area as even after obtaining admission in the University the title of `Doctor’ is enough for the visa officers to screen them as potential immigrants.
