The GSM mobile industry continues to grow at a sweltering pace. There was an overall growth of 4.02 per cent over the previous month. The All India GSM subscriber base grew from 125.57 million in April 2006 to 130.6 million in May 2007 recording an addition of over 5 million during the month under review.
COAI is pleased with the growth of the GSM subscribers, which is being driven primarily by aggressive network expansions by the operators coupled with decreasing tariffs and increasing affordability.
Highest growth
Among all circles, category B circles witnessed the highest rate of growth at 4.40 per cent. Within the category B circles, the highest growth was recorded by the Rajasthan circle (6.22 per cent) followed by Madhya Pradesh circle (5.30 per cent).In terms of growth, category B circles were closely followed by category C circles, which recorded a healthy growth of 4.21 per cent over the previous month. North East circle recorded the highest growth at (6.68 per cent) followed by Bihar at (4.37 per cent).
Category A circles witnessed a growth of 4.05 per cent. Amongst the category A circles, Andhra Pradesh recorded highest growth at (4.09 per cent), followed by Maharasthtra at (4.07 per cent). The metro subscribers grew by 3.04 per cent over the previous month. Delhi recorded the highest growth at (3.93 per cent) followed by Chennai (3.59 per cent).
