With the feeling of having lost a victory over the talking table, a Gurjar mahapanchayat at Pushkar decided on Friday to float another forum to continue peaceful stir over their demand for Scheduled Tribe status to the community.
The mahapanchayat convened by Congress MLA and senior Gurjar leader Govind Singh Gurjar was prominently a congregation of political persons of the community, different from Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsla’s Gurjar Action Committee.
The Colonel and his close aide, Roop Singh, were at the state capital to meet the chief minister when the mahapanchayat took place. The mahapanchayat attended by about 1,000 Gurjars decided to form a Joint Action Committee for Gurjar Reservation headed by Govind Singh Gurjar.
The mahapanchayat also decided to hold a national convention at Pushkar on June 24 to discuss future strategy.
The meeting asked the state government to withdraw cases against Gurjars and enhance compensation to the kin of those killed in police firing.
On the other hand, Colonel Singh requested the state government to stop police atrocities on Gurjars.
Roop Singh also demanded action against the ministers and MLAs from Meena community who rejoiced after the Bainsla-Raje talks on June 4. Is it fair to celebrate over the dead, he wondered.
The government reportedly assured the Gurjar leaders of a fair and impartial investigation, the home secretary said.
The state police registered 264 cases during the agitation from May 29 to June 4. The Gurjar leaders were also charged with provoking the mob into killing a police constable.
