For the first time after partition, a doctor couple from Jammu and Kashmir have joined a hospital at Mirpur in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) as medical officers, apparently in response to a call by POK Prime Minister Attique Ahmed Khan.
Dr Irfan and Dr Saima have joined the government hospital in Mirpur as medical officers, a report in the Dawn from POK Capital Muzafarabad said, without disclosing any details.
First ever
This is for the first time professionals from Jammu and Kashmir have taken up an assignment to work on this side of LOC, even though the level of interaction between various political parties from both sides has increased since the peace process was launched in 2004.
The POK government officials did not reveal the details of how this couple came from the other side of the LOC to work. But this was apparently in response to the call by Khan that doctors and engineers from J and K were welcome to join this side of the LOC, which was badly hit by an earthquake in 2005.
Khan predicted major developments towards the resolution of Kashmir issue in coming days and asked leaders of Kashmiri political parties from both sides to demonstrate greater responsibility.
He appreciated the administrations of New Delhi and Srinagar for their contributions to the efforts for restoration of peace.
While a few seats for J and K students were reserved in a cadet college in Muzafarabad, J & K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had also decided to grant admissions to students from the POK in the universities of J&K.
