West Bengal’s Left Front government is working on a proposal to find a solution to the stand-off over acquisition of land in Singur for Tata Motors’ car plant, CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu said today.
Basu said Industry Minister Nirupam Sen was working on the proposal. “Nirupam is listing points. Legal aspects are also being looked into. Let’s see what happens,” Basu said.
Basu took the initiative to hold a meeting with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to find a solution to the land acquisition problems in Singur and Nandigram.
During the meeting, Banerjee said the Tata car project would not need over 600 acres and the “forcibly acquired” land for the project should be returned.
Basu also admitted that there was not much alternative land left in Singur for industries. “Alternative land is available elsewhere but why should land-losers go there?” He added.
“We certainly want it but how do I know what they (Trinamool Congress) will do?” Basu said on whether a solution could be found.
Reorganisation needed
Basu said after his meeting with Banerjee on June 4 that she raised the issue of 300 farmers yet to collect their compensation cheques regarding the land acquisition drive at Singur.
“The issue needs to be discussed with the West Bengal government and the Tatas. If required, the Tata plant has to be reorganised,” he said.
The 90-years-old leader also volunteered his service for future meetings if necessary and had emphasised the need for continued discussions.
