VRV Singh takes ill, in hospital
Indian paceman Vikram Rajvir Singh was admitted to a hospital in Bangalore on Friday with suspected viral fever, and will be kept for overnight observation before a future course of action is decided. VRV Singh, it is learnt, was first admitted to a hospital in Mysore — where he was part of the bowlers’ camp — on Thursday, and was brought by car to Bangalore on Friday.
Lebanan not to host Asian meet
Lebanon has withdrawn as host of next month's Asian athletics championships due to the security situation in the country, reports Reuters from New Delhi.
Lebanese capital Beirut had been scheduled to host the July 29 to August 2 meet but the country is in the midst of a seven-month political crisis.
The death toll from recent fighting between Lebanese security forces and al Qaeda-inspired militants has risen to 115.
"They've informed us that their government is not ready to give guarantees for the safety of the athletes," Athletics Federation of India secretary Lalit Bhanot said.
Beckham set to play in crucial tie
David Beckham will be included in the Real Madrid squad to play at Real Zaragoza on Saturday, after making good progress on an ankle injury, the Primera Liga leaders said on Friday, reports Reuters. The LA Galaxy-bound Beckham injured his left ankle during England's 3-0 win over Estonia in a Euro 2008 qualifier on Wednesday.
Indian shooters strike it rich
Indian shooters claimed two gold and one silver at the Meeting of Shooting Hopes at Plezen, Czech Republic, reports PTI from New Delhi.
Zakir Khan got gold in free pistol with 549 points. Zakir, Amit Kumar (523) and Kapil (522) shot 1594 points to pocket the team event gold as well.
Navdeep Kaur won the silver in air rifle event with 394 points.
Stephen-Ghouse pair wins title

Blatter to visit South Africa
The President of football’s world governing body FIFA, Sepp Blatter, will pay his first visit to 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa this month since work began to build and upgrade stadia, reports AFP from Johannesburg. Blatter, who expressed concern last year about the progress of construction work, is expected to inspect some of the 10 grounds which are to host matches.
UEFA grants Sweden victory
European soccer’s governing body UEFA have handed Sweden a 3-0 win in their abandoned Euro 2008 qualifier match with Denmark after a Danish fan attacked the referee, reports Reuters from Copenhagen.
UEFA also fined the Danish Football Association 100,000 Swiss Francs ($81,630) and ordered them to play their next four home Euro 2008 qualifiers at least 250-km (155 miles) from Copenhagen.
