The High Court on Tuesday ordered issue of emergent notices to Home Department, Police Commissioner and others following a petition seeking a CoD inquiry against three police officials who allegedly harassed a man abetting his suicide.
Sumithra, the petitioner, said her husband Prakash Reddy committed suicide on March 23, 2006 at his workplace in Yeshwantpur following harassment and threats from Peenya police officials. She alleged then police inspector of Peenya, Rangaswamy, and constables - Hanumantharayappa and Shashidharacharya - had harassed Prakash on the pretext of investigating an earlier incident of a woman’s suicide involving their neighbour.
She said in her petition that: On March 11, 2006, one Byramma had committed suicide leaving a note stating that one D G Mohan whom she loved had refused to marry her, adding that Prakash Reddy knew about their affair. The police arrested Prakash and illegally detained him for one and half days, assaulted him and took away some cash, his bike and mobile. They threatened and warned him asking to produce Mohan within two days and later repeated the harassment while demanding money, while on the other hand, Mohan’s relatives also started threatening him against revealing his whereabouts. Upset, he committed suicide on March 23, 2006 leaving a note giving names and details of harassment by police officials, and Mohan and his relative Reddappa Reddy, she said.
She said that then Yeshwantpur police inspector Sampathkumar had taken her complaint but, had left out the polices’ names. Justice K L Manjunath has ordered notices on the petition.
