Due to the high costs involved many in the city are hesitant to dig borewells, though there is a dire shortage of drinking water in the city, owing to the depleting ground water table.
Nearly 20 borewells out of the 37 dug by the Town Municipal Corporation to tackle the drinking water crisis in the city have gone dry and are rusting.
The population of the city has crossed 50,000 and as per the government rules every household is entitled to have 55 litres of drinking water.
However, due to the shortage of drinking water the residents of Bangarpet are getting drinking water only after a span of 10 days.
Eventhough legislators, parliamentarians and donors have dug several borewells in the city due to the depleting ground water table water is unavailable in most of the borewells.
Also, Bangarpet has not received rains in the past three years.
Tanks in the city premises have all dried up. The water supplied by some of the former legislators and TMC members through tankers has also not proved effective.
As the TMC is not able to fulfil the drinking water needs of the people, several have dug borewells in their house. However, even their efforts have been rendered futile and their money is being wasted.
If Bangarpet does not receive rains even during this year, then the city will have to face acute shortage of drinking water, the public opined.
