The Public Sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is feeling the pinch of dwindling market share in the telecom sector.
“Over two million land line connections were surrendered last year”, BSNL Director (HRD) Gopal Das said while addressing the All India BSNL Executives’ Association Central Working Committee meeting here on Wednesday. There is an immediate need to stop such surrender of land lines, he said.
“We were the sole telephone service providers to the country, but now we have 25 per cent of market share. Though we are making profits, we have additional burden of Rs 4,000 crore, in the form of continued investment,’’ he noted. “However, we are confident of regaining the dwindling market share during 2008-09. We are sanctioning five million mobile lines to South India alone and we are on a customer base expansion spree. While the mobile sector has earned over Rs 703 crore last year, we are doing very well in broadband sector also,’’ he noted.
“Today’s market is all about change in attitude and selling ourselves”, which is missing in us”, said Karnataka Circle BSNL Chief General Manager T S Kuppuswamy.
Employees Association President K Satyanarayana said BSNL should deploy its Rs 40,000 crore cash reserve, which earns paltry interest rate, in investments to earn greater revenue.
