It's set in a small town and to a certain extent, that's where it scores because as an urban audience, even if we find it a bit strange, we would associate it with the place it's set in!
The play, written by Poile Sengupta and directed by Ashish Sen is about English in India. Set in the English department of a small-town college, the story talks of the way the language is taught in the country, its origins, the connect or disconnect people feel with it and just about anything to do with the language. Shiv Kumar as Mr Iyer gave a consistently good performance and Munira Sen's monologue was the most powerful and poignant of the lot.
One couldn't relate to any of the characters and perhaps this is why their behaviour seemed unusual.
The performances were not consistent and yet they did manage to pull the play along. The story did come as a change after all the young urban plays we have been flooded with of late. But somewhere along the way, the play strays from its original purpose and the ending is absurd, even if one considers it metaphorically. The strength of the play lies in the language used — English — which is brilliant. The words and lines are classic and it certainly makes you fall in love with the language.
