To provide objective, authentic information about engineering colleges in the state, the State Government will host a website presenting key information on faculty, placement record, infrastructure and alumni profile to enable the student to select the best.
The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) had constituted a four member committee to decide parameters based on which the college information would be provided. The committee, headed by RVCE College Principal Dr S C Sharma, had submitted a set of draft parameters to the university in February. The final recommendations are awaited.
The details of the colleges are likely to be posted on the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) website before commencement of the CET counselling for professional courses.
The parameters relate to general information of the colleges, faculty resources, course information, central facilities and amenities, alumni profile, best practices followed in the colleges, healthcare and sports facilities, results, placements and training.
Statutory information like whether the institute has AICTE approval, anti-ragging and anti-sexual committee, government approval and AICTE affiliation are also part of the parameters. The details asked under the best practices include students’ performance appraisal and progress report, Parents - Teachers meeting, counselling and mentor system and staff welfare measures. The number of university ranks, percentage of students placed in campus recruitment and training programmes are also highlighted.
These parameters would be applicable to all 144 engineering colleges in the State and the university will furnish the details of the colleges. VTU Registrar Prof M S Shivakumar said the information will be posted on the website. “During the affiliation process, the college will submit the information to the university. The information would be signed by the principal and secretary of the college and would be verified by the Local Inquiry Committee,” he said.
“From the affiliation process till now, there might be a possibility that the college would have incorporated many changes including updating infrastructure. And, this might have not have been mentioned in the data provided to us during affiliation. In such cases, colleges can write to the university and after verification necessary changes will be made in the website,” he added.
Though the colleges have their own websites, the officials felt that some of them do not provide authentic information and mislead the students. Principal Secretary to Higher Education Kaushik Mukherjee said that objective is to guide the students so that they are not deceived by the managements.
