Greenpeace on Thursday presented a ‘Climate Cop’ award to the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corproation Limited (KREDL) for taking the initiative to phase out high energy consuming incandescent bulbs with energy efficient Compact Fluroscent (CFL) Bulbs.
The award was presented by well known environmentalist Yellappa Reddy, fashion designer Prasad Bidappa and Greenpeace volunteers.
Karnataka has launched the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) which will reduce the price of energy efficient CFLs to Rs 15. Under the programme around 50 million incandescent bulbs are proposed to be replaced with CFLs.
Greenpeace India Climate and Energy Campaigner Brikesh Singh hoped that the Government would take a lead in the fight against climate change by replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs.
Greenpeace India Executive Director G Ananthapadmabhan said the CDM scheme launched by the State Government would cut down at least 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
