Women empowerment is not a matter to be discussed in a day or a week but is a programme to be run throughout the year, said Dr Shalini Rajaneesh, Secretary in the Woman and Child Welfare Department.
She was addressing a gathering at the conference hall in the premises of the office of the Commissioner of Police on Friday as part of International Women’s Day. The Commissioner of Police N Achutha Rao and Karnataka State Social Welfare Advisory Board Chairperson Padma Srinivas were also present on the occasion.
Continuing her discussion on women empowerment, Dr Shalini Rajneesh stressed upon the need to do more to elevate the status of women in society. She also talked about the condition of women in rural areas as well as in the slums.
In his address, N Achutha Rao said such functions are helpful in generating new ideas to help those women who are deprived of their rights and prevent them from atrocities on them.
On the occasion, three sewing machines donated by the Lions’ Club were given away to the beneficiaries.
The programme was jointly organised by Parihar, a centre for training, research and development of women and children, and Vanitha Sahaya Vani.
A social organisation SPAD, which is working on HIV/AIDS, presented a cultural programme.
