A Hubli doctor has successfully removed a two inch long broomstick which had struck in the orbit region of the left eye of a 10-year-old girl. Timely surgery performed by Dr Anant Revankar of Vithoba Netralaya saved the girl’s eye.
The broomstick got lodged in Nivedita’s eye (name changed) recently when she was getting ready for school. Her father was angry with her for some reason and he hit her face with a broom. Little blood stains near the eye were ignored by her parents.
After about 10 days, a small yellowish swelling was seen near her eye after which they took her to a few hospitals where x-rays were taken. They were reportedly told that there was nothing wrong and the wound would heal soon.
However, when there was no sign of reduction in pain the anguished parents took her to Dr Anant Revankar. Nothing could be seen by the naked eye except a very minute hole.
The doctor sought to know from the parents what caused the condition of the eye to which the girl’s father told the doctor that he had hit her face with a broom. This vital clue helped the doctor to suspect that a piece of a broomstick might have gone inside the eye and suggested immediate surgery which was performed by Dr Revankar and Dr Devadas.
During surgery a foreign body was observed and upon pulling it was found that it was a two inch piece of broomstick. “The broom stick was not visible in x-ray and the piece of information given by her parents helped him to suspect that a piece of broomstick might have stuck in the eye. The girl would have lost her eye if her parents had acted late”, Dr Revankar said.
