Deccan Herald » City » Detailed Story
City to remain cloudy, rains likely
DH News Service, Bangalore:
The observatory at HAL airport recorded the highest heavy rainfall in 24 hours for the month of March-- from 8.30 pm on March 15 to 8.30 pm on March 16, since it was set up in 1947.

While the city received light to moderate rainfall during the same period, HAL airport recorded 94.5 mm of rainfall  surpassing the previous record of 63.0 mm which was recorded on March 12, 1981.

Of the 94.5 mm total amount of rainfall, 80 mm rainfall has occurred between 6.30 pm on to 8 pm on Saturday evening.

The month of March usually sees very little rainfall, but this year for the last four days, there has been an upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km over sea level over Comorin area and a trough extending from this system was passing through  south interior and north interior Karnataka said Meteorologist, Meteorological Department, B Puttanna. There was moisture feed from sea to south interior Karnataka and temperature was sufficient to help trigger development of a vertical cloud to a height of upto approximately 10 km which produced heavy rain over the HAL airport area and north Bangalore he explained.

During hot weather season the development of clouds under favourable weather condition is common, provided there is moisture available in upper atmosphere. During this season thunder activity with strong wind and lightning will be severe which will bring down the day temperature if it is combined with heavy rain.

Forecast
The city is expected to remain generally cloudy and rain and thundershower are expected.

At sea level a trough of low pressure was formed extending from Coastal Kerala to north interior Karnataka across south interior Karnataka.

Associated upper air trough extended upto 2.1 km above sea level occurred, under this situation more rain or thundershower are likely to occur at many places over coastal and south interior Karnataka and a few places over north interior Karnataka during the next 24 hours, he said.

Another trough of low pressure has formed over  south west Bay off Bengal Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coast, he said.
