While the city received light to moderate rainfall during the same period, HAL airport recorded 94.5 mm of rainfall surpassing the previous record of 63.0 mm which was recorded on March 12, 1981.
Of the 94.5 mm total amount of rainfall, 80 mm rainfall has occurred between 6.30 pm on to 8 pm on Saturday evening.
The month of March usually sees very little rainfall, but this year for the last four days, there has been an upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km over sea level over Comorin area and a trough extending from this system was passing through south interior and north interior Karnataka said Meteorologist, Meteorological Department, B Puttanna. There was moisture feed from sea to south interior Karnataka and temperature was sufficient to help trigger development of a vertical cloud to a height of upto approximately 10 km which produced heavy rain over the HAL airport area and north Bangalore he explained.
During hot weather season the development of clouds under favourable weather condition is common, provided there is moisture available in upper atmosphere. During this season thunder activity with strong wind and lightning will be severe which will bring down the day temperature if it is combined with heavy rain.
