Radha Viswanathan, daughter and disciple of late M S Subbulakshmi was honoured with the title of "Sangeetha Ratna" by Sree Lalithakala Academy at a function held at SVYASA in Jigani on Saturday.
The award was conferred on Radha by Sri Jayendra Puri Mahaswamiji of Sri Raja Rajeshwari Mutt.
Seer said that by honoring an outstanding singer like Radha the society was in a way honouring itself. He said that he was inspired to take up Sanyasa Dharma after listening to "Bhaja Govindam" rendered by MS and Radha, especially the line "Guru Charanambuja.”
Former Lokayukta of Karnataka and former Supreme Court Judge Venkatachala who released the souvenir, "Life of MS through images,” said that MS Subbulakshmi was an outstanding singer who inspired goodness in people. Inspite of so many honours bestowed on her she was a person of great humility.
He wished that her daughter Radha deserved the "Sangeetha Ratna Award" as she was an inseparable part of MS and her music. Radha in her reply said that she dedicated this award to her parents M S Subbulakshmi and T Sadasivam.
After the award function, Radha and her granddaughter S Aishwarya enthralled the audience for an hour.She gave a performance in Bangalore after a a gap of nearly 20 years.
The composition of Purandaradasa "Jagadhodharana" was greeted with a thundering applause as it was MS favourite.
