The City of Tumkur is under the ambitious Nirmal Nagar project. However, the woes of citizens continue as cleanliness in the City has remained a distant mirage. Garbage is strewn everywhere on the roads. Along with this, citizens are wary of another menace - the menace of stray pigs.
Various citizens’ organisations have time and again appealed to the city administration to control the population of pigs. However, no serious efforts have been taken so far by the administration.
Pigs greet citizens who venture out for an early morning walk. Pigs are rampant not only in slums but also in posh localities like SIT, Ashok Nagar, Vidyanagar, Sapthagiri layout, Maruthinagar, Jayanagar, Kuvempu Nagar, Halepete, Mandipete and Chikkapete.
Accidents
Pigs often turn out to be a nightmare especially for bike riders. While pigs roam freely on roads not giving a damn to the traffic, bike riders, in order to avoid pigs often go and hit other vehicles and pedestrians thereby causing accidents.
Pigs are not just bothering the common man. They roam around in herds around the houses of dignitaries like former minister S Shivanna and former legislator H Ningappa. When political leaders themselves are not being able to escape the menace of pigs, what about us, ask the general public.
Every time when there are reports in the media about the pig menace, the CMC Commissioner warns the pig owners to take care of their pigs or be ready to face the consequences. A three-days ultimatum is also given to the owners each time. However, citizens allege that no action has been taken so far.
The City administration must take the example of Hubli. Five years ago Hubli had been facing similar problems.
The then city commissioner of Hubli took a stern decision and after warning the pig owners, he issued orders to kill pigs at sight. Thus, stray pigs were shot at sight much to the relief of citizens.
People of North Karnataka who are now settled in Tumkur feel that Tumkur CMC should follow the footsteps of Hubli Corporation and get rid of the pigs.
Public health
Pigs are not just a hindrance in the day-to-day movement of people and vehicle. They also pose a threat to public health as they carry disease spreading virus. There are also instances of pigs biting children.
The recently elected CMC president Aslam Pasha and vice president Vaalechnadru are enthusiastic and keen on taking up many people friendly projects.
The citizens of Tumkur hope that they will also take up the issue of pig menace seriously and take some constructive steps to solve the problem in the coming days.
