Crops of grapes, potato, mangoes and ragi were adversely effected due to the unseasonal rains on Saturday evening.
There was about 200 hectares of potato crop, 400 hectares of grapes. Many of the farms where potatoes were planted were almost ready to be plucked. However the rains played spoilt sport. The story was the same even with the grape farmers and their vineyards. The rains have meant that ripe grapes have fallen down. In some farms which were sprayed with pesticides, the farmers have to re do the entire procedure because the rains have washed away the pesticides. The vine yard owners are especially in doldrums because the redmill pesticide used for grapes is quite expensive.
Ragi has been a repeat crop with many farmers in the region. However this year the rains have soaked the standing crops and created heavy loses for the farmers. This is especially a tragedy because ragi crops were excellent this year.
Even the mango trees have been hurt by the unpredictable weather which were still flowering and the rains have meant that they fell to the ground.
Tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower and other crops have also been hit by the rains but not to a great extent.
A silver lining to this tragedy is that the rains have considerably cooled down temperature and the ensured that grass is available to the cattle there.
