Glitterati delight

Big names from Bollywood graced the launch of a bridal store in the City recently

Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are...’ is a usual rhyme for most dos in Bangalore. But this event was quite a welcome change. It was all star and sparkle at the launch of concept store ‘Shimmer’ on Vittal Mallya Road. Big names from Bollywood descended down, adding much excitement to the launch. From the sensuous Dimple Kapadia, ace film-maker Shekhar Kapur, legendary actress Vyjayanthimala Bali to singer Usha Uthup  - all joined the top brass social glitterati of Bangalore to celebrate the store inauguration.

Shimmer is a three-floored concept bridal store set up by designer duo Jamila and Seema Malhotra along with Nafisa and Nikhath Noor.

Not many know but Jamila and Seema are responsible for the costumes of ‘Shakespeare In Love’, Johnny Depp starrer ‘Finding Neverland’ and ‘Elizabeth’, the Oscar winning film by Shekhar Kapur. Interestingly, Shekhar is also family as Jamila’s brother-in-law. Speaks volumes of his presence at the store.

The launch kicked off with the lighting of the lamp by old-friend Dimple Kapadia, who’s breezy entry and exit left the lensmen frenzied and eventually disappointed. A fashion presentation, showcasing exquisite lehengas, sarees and churidaar kameezes, took place at Sunny’s restaurant. Like the stars and the store name, the clothes too shimmered on the runway.

Predominantly in net and blingy sequins, the rather conventional bridal collection had an interesting colour story. One saw aqua blue, lime green and yellow lehengas with dashes of purples and wine unlike the conventional reds. Similar colour palette was used for trendy kurtis and anarkalis.

“The collection is inspired by the Mughal styles and contemporarised with lace and translucent fabrics. I like garments looking like jewellery,” said Seema, who designs by instinct and actually has no degree in design.

The showstopper for the event had an effect true to its meaning. Accomplished actress Vyjayanthimala walked the runway to the tunes of ‘Bahaaron phool barsaao...’, showcasing an exquisite off-white saree and jadaau jewellery and taking many back into her glorious past. Later she sportingly jigged away to singer Usha Uthup’s offering ‘Bindiya Chamkegi...’.

One also spotted celebs from namma Bengaluru like Vani Ganapathy and Sumalatha Ambarish in the social crowd. Truly, a star-studded event.

Shimmer is located on 33/1 Vittal Mallya Road in the lane next to Sunny’s.
