St Patrick's Day was celebrated on Sunday by Kiran Majumdar Shaw, who is the Honorary Consul for Ireland in Karnataka. Patrick Bourne, the Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Ireland at New Delhi also attended the celebrations here. The small Irish community residing in the City and several other Indians who have spent time working or living in Ireland were also present on the occasion.
Kiran Majumdar announced the decision to start an Indo-Irish forum which would be inaugurated in May at Dublin in Ireland. She said that this forum would help to deepen the economic engagement between the two countries. Those present first sang the Indian national anthem followed by the Irish national anthem.
The theme for St Patrick's Day celebrations was the hidden pot of gold associated with the Leprechauns. The Leprechauns, the legendary Irish fairies, are a traditional part of St Patrick's Day. The Leprechauns were also known to possess a hidden pot of gold. If caught, the Leprechauns could be forced, under the threat of physical violence, to take the captor to the location of the treasure.
To gain pot of gold the captor had to keep an eye on the leprechauns at all times or he would vanish. Leprechauns were famous for tricking their captors into looking away so that they could vanish and save their pot of gold.
The Irish citizens gathered for the occasion sang their favourite Irish songs and were all dressed with a touch of green to highlight the occasion.
Children both Irish and Indian participated in games and prizes were given.
